Our Story

Our History

Lake Church launched in January 1997 as a church plant from Hope Church, a Foursquare church in neighboring Snohomish, WA. A team of eight families began meeting in the Lake Stevens Middle School's cafeteria. While the church family grew, we continued to meet in that cafeteria for 13 years. In 2010 God opened up our current location, just a few blocks north! In 2012,  Dan Laurenzo became our Lead Pastor and immediately began assembling a multi-gifted Pastoral Team.

We are a multi-generational combination of old faces, new faces and everything in between. We're joined together by love for Jesus Christ, for our community and for each other.

Our Team

These are the people who serve as part of a community of pastors and leaders at Lake Church.  If you have a passion for serving Christ and His church, contact Pastor Dan dan@thelakechurch.org.

  • Dan Laurenzo: Lead Pastor / Aloha Shirt Collector

In his role as Lead Pastor, Dan Laurenzo sets the vision and strategic direction for the staff and Lake Church as a whole. After growing up in a loud Italian family in Upstate New York, he entered a job after college as a management trainee with a retail company Liberty House- Hawaii. Following ministry gigs with youth and single adults in Kailua HI, he begrudgingly returned to the mainland to attend graduate school in Dallas.

Moments after he was handed his Masters of Theology degree, he boarded the first available flight headed back to Hawaii. He served as a youth pastor, associate pastor and lead pastor on Oahu and "The Big Island" for 16 years before heading to the Pacific Northwest in 1997 to plant a church with his family in the Bridle Trails area of Kirkland.

Since arriving in Washington, Dan has served in multiple capacities at churches of all sizes (including New Life Foursquare and Lake Sammamish Foursquare) and consulted in ministries throughout the region. He has three adult kids and spends his free time running up and down Centennial Trail or paddling his kayak all over the Puget Sound. A card-carrying member of the 12th Man, Dan attributes the fruitfulness of his prayer life to rooting for the Mariners throughout the Bavasi years.

If you want to see fire in his eyes, start a conversation about living your vocation and call in our community.

  • John Blake: Teaching Pastor/ Resident Englishman

John Blake, Associate Pastor at Lake Church, has spent most of his life wondering what he would like to do when he grows up. In the interim, he has grown up and now realizes he was having a blast doing whatever it was he was doing at the time.

John’s career began in broadcasting and journalism in his native Canada where they are still respected professions and journalists still try to remain objective. It was that objectivity (plus a loving wife who motivated him to take a good look at Jesus) that brought him to the realization of the truth of Christianity and the reality of God’s Kingdom. Since then, John and Sandy-- along with their three children-- have committed their lives to serving God on a journey of discipleship and discovery.

Beginning in the 80’s, the Blakes served with Youth With a Mission in Cyprus and Egypt. After returning to the United States, John produced a series of programs about the Arab world for Christians in the West. He then became a missions pastor at Mill Creek Foursquare, then Senior pastor of small church in North Everett for eight years.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, John mobilized teams to go and do short term relief work, which led he and Sandy to move to Mississippi for a year to coordinate relief teams throughout the Gulf Coast. Upon returning to Everett, John became a police and fire chaplain. He and Sandy came to Lake Church in 2010, where they serve in Marriage and Family ministries as well as teaching classes on various subjects throughout the year.

The Blake's current adventure is building a missions program to equip and train pastors and evangelists in Ethiopia, a passion sparked when his daughter adopted three Ethiopian children. He is also the author of a book for new believers called, “What Now, God?” currently being used as the foundation for Lake Church’s discipleship training program.

  • Christy Laurenzo: Kids' Ministry Director /

    Teacher's Pet

Christy has a lifelong passion for learning and teaching. As the leader of our church’s Kids’ Ministry, she has the privilege of doing both on a regular basis. She also has a built-in excuse to play on the floor with kids, which is pretty much the coolest job perk ever.

After being born in Santa Monica, CA, Christy grew up in Salem, OR with her parents and sisters. After high school, she attended Pacific Lutheran University. While she was there, she earned majors in English and Education along with minors in Spanish and French. She then spent 10 years as a foreign student advisor at her alma mater and Seattle Pacific University. She then went back to school and received her Master of Arts in Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary. She has taught at Eugene Bible College and is now an adjunct professor at Northwest University.

Between being a student and being a teacher, Christy landed her dream job at the University of Washington, working in the Department of Global Health for five years with research physicians seeking to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS. She coordinated international conferences for research groups and had the honor of travelling to South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Amsterdam and Paris. During her time at UW, her group did research on an antiretroviral drug which as a result is now FDA-approved and is being used to help stop the spread of AIDS across the globe. Christy has always been a world traveler with a heart for foreign missions, having served in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Haiti, Japan, Peru, and the Philippines.

Christy married Dan in 2013, and was immediately indoctrinated into his fabulous Italian family that regularly overwhelms her by talking all at the same time. When she’s not teaching or working at the church she loves to read, run, hike, dabble at watercolor painting, visit family and friends, and buy statement earrings.

  • Doug Love: Executive Pastor/ Prolific Shot Blocker

Doug and his wife Leslie moved back to their familiar Snohomish County digs in 2015. Their story is that they served in executive and shepherding pastoral roles in Foursquare churches in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico and then in Boulder, CO.  We are still investigating. Naturally their call to resort locales landed them back in Lake Stevens to serve with us!

Doug is a master of organizational process and helping us to "get the trains running on time"at Lake Church.  He builds teams and  designs calendar for Lake Church.  (Think Leo McGarry, Chief of Staff, on West Wing... only nicer.)  He has served effectively on small church and megachurch staffs , including New Life/Everett, for three decades.

Doug owns a successful home and office cleaning business for his day job.  He is one of those rare leaders who has reinvented himself numerous times.  His career path includes senior roles in manufacturing, produce brokerage, real estate and business ownership.

A Snohomish County native, Doug graduated from Snohomish High School. He is the proud father of three adult children and spends his free time mercilessly spoiling his 9 grandchildren.

Doug and Leslie met at Seattle Pacific University and credit that time and environment with the early stirrings for Jesus and for kingdom service. If you followed Snohomish Highschool basketball and SPU roundball in the 70's Doug's handsome mug may look vaguely familiar to you. Children at Lake Church still look up in awe at the wing span he presents.

  • Rich Hanson: Worship Director/ Artist Advocate

Rich Hanson brings passion and skill to Lake Church worship ministry. His motor is constantly running, envisioning new and classic ways to invite us into the presence of Jesus.

Born in the Bay Area, CA. Rich credits his dad's strumming on Spanish classical guitar with awakening his early music mojo, and his family's good taste in moving away from that shadowy 49ers land as fast as their little legs could carry them.

A 23 year marriage veteran, he is convinced his Kingdom-called wife Lisa and beautiful daughters, ages 19 and 15, that keep him tethered to wisdom and sanity. We agree. Confirmed "foodies", you can find him and the girls at home watching science fiction films, and feasting on food we commoners only dream of cooking.

Rich brings a University of Washington music degree and decades of musical performance, and worship leading experience to the Lake team. He has played guitar and sung with a who's who list of Pacific Northwest artists; and formed his own band "Search No More" who do community stage and worship gigs throughout the state.

You know you've strayed into a passion area with Rich when you hear him say "I'm not kidding. I've got goose bumps on my arm right now...just talking about it." Look out for the impending creative explosion.

  • Jesse Maddox: Youth Director/ Ink Aficionado

Jesse Maddox and his wife Lisa lead the middle school and high school ministry at Lake Church. He is easy to spot on a Sunday morning. He is also responsible for drastically increasing the staff’s street cred by showing off his extensive tattoo collection, which he insists are an expression of his strongest beliefs.

After serving for eight years in the Army and Army National Guard, Jesse received his degree in construction management. Since then, he has worked as a Senior Project Manager for a local developer and most recently he has transitioned full time into a career as a real estate agent. A lifelong learner, Jesse recently completed an Associates Degree in Christian Leadership.

In his spare time, Jesse’s favorite hobbies are camping, hiking, wakeboarding, snowboarding, and favorite travel destination is Mexico, but his dream is to spend a couple months backpacking through Rome. While he hates swimming, he insists that snorkeling is an absolute must-do activity whenever he visits new places. His passion for seeing young people grow in their love for Christ is rivaled only by his rabid devotion to the Seahawks. He’s a doting father of three and has been married to the love of his life for three years.
